O. Henry is a pseudonym, the real name is William Sydney Porter. He has become a symbol to represent a recognizable species of short story writing. He wrote nearly three hundred stories. Most of O. Henry` s were translated into foreign languages. His stories are very American in language. O. Henry uses o lot of stylistic devices, such as: exaggeration, incongruous comparisons, malapropism, misquotations and inflated circumlocutions. O. Henry intentionally avoids sharp social problems. In his stories we find inhabitants of big cities and ranches, highway outlaws as well as self-made business tycoons come into wealth and power through freak of chance. And one of the most popular and famous story is “Mammon and the Archer” And I would like to analyse this story. As we see the title of this story is obscure, because in this title the author makes use of one of the most expressive tropes – a metaphor. “Nicholas Nickleby” is one of the most famous novels of Charses Dickens. And I would like to tell you about the screening of this novel. “Nickolas Nickleby” is a British/American drama film. The film tells us the story of the life and adventures of Nicholas Nickleby. At the beginning of the film we meet with Nicholas and his family. The film transfers us in England, the 1st half of 19th century (Victorian era). Young Nicholas and his family have enjoyed a comfortable life. Than Nicholas` father dies and the family is left penniless. Nicholas, his sister and his mother go to London to ask for help from their disgusting uncle Ralph. Ralph is a cruel person he starts to exploit Nicholas` family. Nicholas is sent to a school run by the cruel, abusive, and horribly person Wackford Squeers. Nicholas runs away with his student Smike.
