Text Analysis. W. W. Thackeray “Vanity Fair”
W. W. Thackeray, one of the greatest English prose writers. “Vanity
Fair” is one of the most famous novels of William Makepeace
Thackeray. And I would like to tell you about it. “Vanity Fair” is
his masterpiece. The novel is heavy with satire. Thackeray attacks
the most common vices of the upper classes – money worship,
reverence for ranks and titles, hypocrisy, cruelty and corruption.
May be it can be very strange, but this novel is about blonde, in
reality Becky Shard has red hair, but in her heart (in her soul)
she is a real blonde. She is very beautiful, clever, prudent and
sly. The novel transfers us in England, the 19th century. As we see the title of this story is obscure, because in this title
the author makes use of one of the most expressive tropes – a
metaphor. “Vanity Fair” is an upper class, and this upper class
values us. But from another hand we can say that title is clear,
because we always try to sell ourselves at a high price in this
“Vanity Fair”. So after these explanations we can say that this
text will be about money and love. Of course at first we can think
that this text will be about love and passion with happy end,
without any intresting facts, but in reality it isn` t so. The theme of this story is relation between people in
different kinds of society. The main idea of this story is Becky` s
career (her aspiration for being rich and famous) and her family,
most of all her son. Many of us (I mean parents) chose the career,
but not family, we forgot about it. The plot develops surround people` s feelings, their choice
between career and family. The action takes place in England. We
can find some facts of it in the text: “…in a great party in a
spending saloon… that officer imparted it to Lord Steyne`s
gentleman…” This story is about career, love, family and friendship. The main
characters of this story is Becky Sharp, the minor characters of
this story are her son, her husband, Lord Steyne and servants. I
think it will be difficult to define the protagonist and antagonist
characters. We can` t say that Becky is a protagonist hero and so
we can` t say that she is an antagonist hero. In my point of view
the main protagonist of this film is Amelia Sedley and of course
there is opposite characters. The main villain is Lord Steyne,
because he destroyed all Becky` s life. But as we know the good
people always win the evil. So and now I would like to retell you this story in
brief. William Makepeace Thackeray's witty assessment of the British class
system, as seen through the experiences of one young woman, is
brought to the screen with some serious star power in this period
comedy drama. Becky Sharp is a bright and ambitious girl born to a
poor British family. Becky is determined to make something of
herself however she can, and after accepting a job as a nanny for
the children of the powerful and aristocratic, but very miserly,
Sir Pitt Crawley, she wastes no time ingratiating herself with the
family. Pretty Becky catches the eye of Crawley's handsome and
eligible son Rawdon, and becomes chummy with sharp-tongued Aunt
Matilda. Between the two of them, Becky is introduced to London's
most exclusive social circle, where she becomes re-acquainted with
Amelia Sedley, a former school chum who is amused by Becky's
efforts to scale the ladder of social influence. Becky weds Rawdon,
but following initial happiness, the social and economic stability
she dreamed of begins to collapse when he begins drowning his
troubles in gambling and drink, and soon she turns to the powerful
Lord for support. Meanwhile, Amelia's fortunes fall even harder
following the death of her husband. Of course the end of this drama
story is happy end. The end of this story is the marriage of Becky
Sharp and the insight of Amelia. We understood that in reality she
loved William Dobbin, and she knew it when Becky opened Amelia’s
eyes to Dobbin` s love. We can find both of conflicts in this text. External conflict
is a conflict between Becky and her family. Becky wants to get to
the highest society. Internal conflict is a conflict of feelings
and emotions of members of family. In reality Becky love her son,
but she can`t understand that she love him. The action is growing step by step. The climax of this
chapter we can find in the end, when we see the kitchen and the
housemaid, she looked a spider. She raised broom and swept away
him. It`s a metaphor, the author compares Becky with this spider.
Like this spider Becky couldn` t be happy. Of course we can find many stylistic devices in this text.
The title of this story is Metaphor. The author tries to show us
his attitude to upper class. In the end of this story we can find a
metaphor I mean the spider. We can find a lot of examples of irony.
The author uses it because he show us his attitude to upper class
and his attitude to Becky. As for me I like it very much, because the end of this story
is uncommon and it`s a big plus. I`d advise everybody to read this
novel.
